Cats, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Maverick, and Ad Astra – Trailer Talk

Taylor Swift in Cats

So, a bunch of trailers dropped today…guess I should talk about them.

I am an unashamed massive Kevin Smith fan, so it should be to no one’s surprise that Jay & Silent Bob Reboot has been one of my most anticipated movies of 2019. Kevin Smith is back at the helm of a View Askewniverse flick for the first time since Clerks II in 2006! I could not be any more pumped. Jay & Silent Bob Reboot is not a ‘reboot’ per se, it’s a sequel to 2001’s Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. This time the stoner duo are back on the road to stop a reboot of the Bluntman and Chronic flick that they attempted to sabotage in Strike Back—it’s all very meta. The trailer semi-focuses on the premise of the flick but is more geared towards giving us a look at the multitude of cameos that this film is going to be laden with. Returning to the View Askewniverse are the likes of Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Shannon Elizabeth, and Jason Lee alongside various newcomers including Chris Hemsworth. We also get a feel for the comedy which of course has not changed since 2001—and I love it; the best line in the trailer coming from Harley Quinn Smith which feel very fitting. This trailer is fun, energetic, and an all-round good time. You can tell the target audience is the fans of the previous films, which I appreciate, and If you haven’t seen them, all I can say is give it a watch. If you like what you see you’ll probably enjoy the final product… if not, you really won’t.

Why? Who thought this was a good idea? Why is this cast so star studded? Why is this filmed with what looks like a Snapchat filter on all their faces? Who came up with these designs? Why is this so unsettling? Who thought appealing directly to Furries was a good target audience? Why is the trailer for Cats more horrifying than the trailer for It 2? Just… why?

Tom Cruise is back in the pilot’s seat for Top Gun: Maverick. 33 years later we have a sequel to the classic that helped cement Tom Cruise as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. This time, Maverick seems to be in danger of losing his place in the world. This trailer provides us with bare details of the plot. Maverick hasn’t progressed, his breed is dying out—sure, we’ve seen it before, but that’s not necessarily all bad,  and done well, this type of story could work here.  Mostly the trailer focuses on the flying, which is to be expected, and of course the obligatory shirtless dude on the beach thrown in the mix. This trailer is fine. It’s exactly what you would expect from this film and there is nothing wrong with that.

When was the last time Brad Pitt was in a film that wasn’t constantly plastered everywhere? I don’t remember. There’s even another project he’s in that’s everywhere right now—although that may be helped along by the fact it’s a Tarantino flick. I had never heard of Ad Astra before this trailer, but after watching it, consider me intrigued. This is the second trailer and it is a boiling mix of plot details, characters, and interesting settings. The genre seems to be slightly hard to pin down based on just this trailer. Is this more The Martian or Blade Runner? I don’t really know, but I am excited to find out.

But really…what the hell were the people who made Cats thinking?
