Good Boys – Trailer Talk

It’s been a desolate time for trailers since the last instalment of Trailer Talk. Not to say there haven’t been any good ones, just nothing all that interesting or different on offer. HBO finally dropped the first full trailer for the final season of Game of Thrones, and it was good, but there’s not much to talk about other than to say, “Awesome… the dragons are arriving at Winterfell.” It’s just stock standard Game of Thrones fair. The same can be said of Santa Clarita Diet or Good Omens. These are all just good, normal trailers that I don’t have much to say about. But yesterday, the drought of normality was at last broken with the release of the red band trailer for Good Boys.

What makes this trailer so interesting? Well, for one, it’s an unexpected flick that I hadn’t even heard about before the trailer (it’s nice to have a surprise every once in a while) and two, it’s basically Superbad but with twelve-year-olds. So—what could go wrong? The point outlined by producer Seth Rogen in the first 20 seconds is exactly what could go wrong, the stars of the film aren’t even allowed to watch this trailer. Producer Seth explains their predicament: they’re allowed to swear and actually do all of the inappropriate things but, hey, they aren’t allowed to watch themselves do them, because that’s what really matters. This intro is awesome, hats off to whoever thought of it. It’s funny while providing commentary on how fucked up the whole rating system can be at times. After that’s done, the trailer itself begins. What’s presented is pretty much what you would expect when you imagine Superbad but on the American middle school level. The kids mess around with sex toys, attempt to shoplift alcohol and look up porn for the first time. There’s plenty of great one-liners and silly scenarios to laugh at throughout the whole trailer.

The obvious intention, and I keep coming back to it, is recapturing the vibe of Superbad, which the creators have managed to nail. The best-looking thing about this film is that. As much as Mum and Dad want to deny it, this is pretty damn accurate to the age group it’s portraying. Over the top, yes, but it is a movie after all. If the entire movie can retain the same vibe that this trailer has managed to capture, we may have a great new comedy on our hands. Just make sure you don’t let your innocent little 12-year-old watch this trailer, it may scar them for life or— even worse— remind them of the past weekend.
