Spider-Man: Far From Home – Trailer Talk

Spider-man and Aunt may far from home

My third Marvel trailer in a row. Do I sense a pattern forming? And before anyone says it, no, I am unfortunately not getting any of that sweet Disney money. Spider-Man: Far From Home had its first teaser released today and Marvel has just dropped the spoileriest of spoilery trailers imaginable (well that is if you haven’t read a comic book before and don’t know the adage that death means nothing in these worlds). Really, this trailer isn’t a spoiler for Avengers: Endgame at all; we all know that Peter will come back along with the rest of the dusted gang, and the fun of Endgame is in the how they get back.

Far From Home is the follow-up to Tom Hollands well-regarded first solo outing as the quippy webslinger and this first look teaser straight off the bat answers a lingering question from the end of Homecoming: ‘how is aunt May going to react to Peter being Spider-Man in this universe?’ Apparently, it seems she responds very well. Her and Peter are high-fiving and it seems that this aunt is very supportive of her nephew’s super-powered exploits; even secretly packing Peter’s Spidey suit for his European school trip without him knowing. This European trip is where most of the trailer spends its time, and it seems that this is where the movie is also going to spend most of its narrative. While in Europe, Peter expresses his inevitable interest in MJ to Ned who is immediately sleep darted by none-other than Nick Fury. As if Spidey could ever have a peaceful holiday. Samuel L. Jackson is doing his absolute best ‘I don’t give a shit’ face in this scene and I love it. From here, of course, we start to get some action and it seems as if some sort of elemental creatures are attacking throughout Europe and Nick Fury needs Spider-Man’s help with them. We have a few shots of a Water one who looks suspiciously like Hydro-Man and a dirt one who also looks suspiciously like another Spider-Man villain, Sandman.

This all leads up to the big entrance of a villain I have been wanting to see on screen for a very long time, Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Here, Mysterio seems to be fighting against the elemental creatures while the world thinks him to be a good guy. I can’t say enough about how excellent I think Mysterio looks from his outfit to the casting choice. I’m just so excited to see him on screen finally. After this, the trailer closes with a comedic scene about Flash’s love for Spider-Man just before he calls Peter a Dick-Wad, its an easy joke but, hey, it’s Spider-Man– they’re all easy jokes.

I loved this trailer, but of course I did come out of it with a few reservations. The first worry I have about this trailer is that I don’t want to see Nick Fury being placed in the same role that Tony was in Homecoming; I think the pseudo-father story-line should be finished for Peter, and doing the same thing again would be tiresome and undo the emotional impact that Peter and Tony’s story together had. My second concern is with the two elementals shown. If they are Sandman and Hydro-Man themselves, I am hoping that Sony/Marvel hasn’t gone and pulled a Spider-Man 3 on us. In saying that, I have a lot of faith that they won’t. Marvel trailers are built to create hype and excitement. For me, the massive Spider-Man nerd that I am, this trailer has achieve its goal. One of my favourite Spider-Man villains is finally making it to the big screen and Peter is starting to look a bit more mature and confident. I’m extremely excited to see how this one turns out, and now I’m going to go watch it three more times.
