Captain Marvel – Trailer Talk

Another week, another new trailer from Marvel. Well, okay, they don’t come out every week, but at the rate these films are coming out, it’s close enough. The latest trailer for Captain Marvel has arrived and while it’s not the first—this is trailer number three—it is the most interesting. The first few trailers have been levelled with various criticisms. Some I found fair, and some are your regular basement-dweller-moronic. On the fair side of the criticism, I do agree that the first two trailers didn’t present Carol Danvers as a character very well, lacking any real personality and creating the illusion that Brie Larson was playing a stone-faced, one-dimensional character. Other criticism expressed concerns that the film looked like it was going to be a CG-fest bore, but I feel those worries have been allayed with this trailer.

Trailer three is packed with a lot of content that had previously been seen in the first two, but we are given plenty of fresh content to chew on, mostly in the form of character moments. Carol Danvers’ multiple conversations with Nick Fury show that she has a lighter side, while training on the Kree homeworld with Jude Law’s character Mar-Vell shows her tougher side. For anyone that still thought she straight up punched an old lady in the face, Carol also gives us a quick run-down of what the Skrulls are—shape-shifting aliens. What I find most interesting about this third trailer is that it seems to have been created with all the previous criticism in mind, giving us fewer CG light-shows and a closer look at what Carol as a character is actually going to be like. While I’m sure there will continue to be plenty more reservations about this film from the general public, this third trailer has eased a lot of my worries and has left me feeling much more confident in Captain Marvel’s capabilities.
