It’s just about Christmas time people! If there is one thing most of us have come to expect over recent years, it is that Netflix will drop a god-awful Christmas flick for us to cringe over. It has become a kind of tradition over the past few years in many households, mine included, for there to be reserved a special night just to watch that crappy Christmas movie. This year’s addition is The Princess Switch trailer – a princess and pauper tale wrapped in lots of tinsel. That title should really give you enough information to know what you are in-store for already.

Starting out, we find our main character Vanessa Hudgens (I’m not bothering to learn her characters name) is invited to go to a faraway kingdom to join a baking competition she has always wanted to enter. The Great British Bake Off seems to have really stepped up its game, as we arrive in the fake fairytale kingdom. Blanketed in snow and sickly Christmas decor, there is no conceivable way this place could be even imagined as real. It is then that the trailer decides “Hey let’s give them the premise!” so, whilst preparing for the baking competition, Vanessa Hudgens bumps into, would you have guessed it, Vanessa Hudgens! However, this time, she’s a posh princess. From here the obvious things ensue; the princess wants to know what its like to live a normal life so proposes a life swap for two days, and the pauper jumps at the chance to live in absolute luxury. This and everything else in the rest of the trailer can be summed up with the following Gif:

Everything in this movie looks like it’s been done before. Even the trailer isn’t anything different to every other Christmas movie cash grab that has come before it. Even if the film might be doing something new with this recycled narrative, the trailer doesn’t show us. In summary, I highly doubt the possibility of anything new and inventive in this film. In the end, who cares? This IS just a crappy Christmas meme-fest, looking for some action on Twitter. In perfect tonal sync with the film, the trailer gives us over-the-top cheerful music, vibrant colours and everything you have come to expect in your new yearly Netflix Christmas special. So, watch The Princess Switch trailer below, and get ready to get tipsy and soak up that holiday cheer!
